First Lesson. }Friday, October 28, 2011
So, I had my first Design and Illustration class today cos I was on MC last friday.
Victor went through the history of illustration and introduced some illustration types like lithography, abstract expressionalism, photo realism, cubism, surrealism, dada, etc. I don't quite understand the point of dada. Dada is a form of anti-art, which is by defacing the original artworks of some famous artists. So one of the examples given by Victor was the defaced Mona Lisa. What I don't understand is that defacing artworks is also a form of art piece. So why is it anti-art?
I find photo realism interesting. I'm pretty impressed with how artists manage to draw or paint artworks to make it seem like they are photographs. And then I remembered coming across a few pieces of artwork done by Dignity13 on deviantART Gallery. So I've decided to post 2 of his artworks here!
This is a drawing done using colour pencils. It is a drawing of Captain Jack Sparrow, a character from Pirates of the Carribean.
And this is a drawing done using graphite pencils. It is a drawing of Green Lantern.
The two artworks above look so much like the real posters of the movies! It's really impressive to see artworks like that from people who are not really artists. How I wish I can draw half as well as them!
So after the history of illustration, we had to do two group work activities, which is to find the current illustration styles and also to find 5 persuasive and informative advertisements. Although we did not present, we did the powerpoint slides nonetheless. So here's an example for each of the things that we were supposed to find for our group activity!
A magazine cover, featuring an artwork that is categorised under photo realism.
An informative advertisement about a gaming system.

A persuasive advertisement of Dior's watch.
So that's the end of the things we learned during the first lesson! Shall end the post here now. Peace out!
